My recent work on the Museum for Obeast Conservation Studies (MOCS) satirizes the social stigma around fatness through the legitimizing tropes of science and nature conservation. The project is loosely conducted as a scientific organization that coordinates obeast field investigations and educates the public about obeasts through museum exhibitions, nature documentaries, and awareness campaigns.

Among my roles for this project is performing as the North American Obeast, a fictitious genus of endangered mammals. By dehumanizing obesity and re-casting it as the obeast, the MOCS project exaggerates the everyday mistreatment of fat people to the extent that it becomes funny rather than merely requiring the viewer’s pity. My work asks viewers to begin participating in body-acceptance dialogs by first simply acknowledging the existence of cultural fat bias, and perhaps even recognizing their own presuppositions and judgments about body size.

Antfarmers have been spurred by the warmer weather to come out of hibernation! Join us for our first First Friday of 2011 on March 4, 6-9pm! On exhibit will be a quirky collection art exploring sports and madness, offering a double entendre to the term March Madness.

Also, don’t miss the Only Burger truck parked next door at Rebus Works that night! Yummmm.

We are looking for talented, innovative, affable artists to join the farm. Antfarm is a collective of up to 10 artists working in a variety of media in our beautiful warehouse building in Boylan Heights. We have two small gallery spaces which host solo and group exhibitions of farmers’ work on First Fridays during the warmer months.

Applicants should submit reasonable-sized jpegs or a link to their current websites to antfarmstudios@gmail.com. Tours can also be arranged through that email address.

Armor, an exhibit of handmade sterling silver and gold jewelry by metalsmith Claire Jacobs, will be featured in Gallery 1.  Antfarm Studio Artists will exhibit new work in Gallery 2.
